I spy a Bay Area license plate frame on your Volvo.

You, sir, are correct.

I feel like all of these memes are humble-brags about how cool the creator thinks his car is . They’ve been ruined for me.

If I made one for the MR2 half those squares would be Ferraris, but nobody actually thinks I drive a Ferrari. Most outsiders probably think it’s an old economy car, with weird proportions if they’re really looking. :(

Most outsiders think it’s a Fiero.

You’ve been spending too much time on CarThrottle, now, haven’t you! ;)

For the most part, though, I concur and I tried to keep a reasonable balance here. My friends don’t really bother to figure it out, so it may as well be a Focus estate to them. My mom always says “Oh, how cute!” since she’s driven Caprices and minivans for the past twenty years. Society pretty much labels any ‘Volvo wagon’ as a brick. Police officers probably don’t care (this one was the most difficult) but probably would just see it as a generic hot hatch if I happen to be driving a bit too spiritedly. I definitely am not shy about making full use of the car, though, and there are times where the BTCC comparison, although an obvious exaggeration, seems to fit the bill...

I’d love to see more of these examples, although I get your point about the MR2. You could think outside the box, though! Sneaky Pete is right about the Fiero, and you can’t forget classics like the Fiat X 1/9 (shudder), the Lancia Stratos, and even Porsche Boxster. The more esoteric the better!

I kick myself for not buying a clean, low mileage V50 two years ago when I had the chance.

This is a dirty, high mileage one but they’re still solid little cars. The Ford C1 platform seems to be excellent, and we’re thinking of getting my little brother a Mazda 3 hatch when he starts driving.

Yes! There’s a blue Focus ST in my neighborhood, the owner had a orange ST prior. I wouldn’t mind owning one for real.

Awesome! I take it you’re usually the designated driver, your mom thinks that your Bimmer is fancier than it is, society figures E39=M5, the police don’t even notice a generic German saloon, you drive it like you stole it, and in reality it’s simply a well-kept albeit low-key German sports sedan.

I think you mean P1 in our case! Still, C1 was very much a Volvo-focused project what with most of the safety features and running gear shared with Ford and Mazda, not to mention they had to make the entire thing wide enough for our esoteric five cylinders!

Pretty much, although with the friends it’s more that they think it’s the nicest car they’ve ever been in.

That’s always nice to hear, especially from non-car people! Like one of my friends remarked the other day that the V50 is smooth, and I told her that it’s only smooth if you drive it that way and she responded, “But, you know, some cars just aren’t comfortable like this...” Makes you take a step back and realize that everything’s got it’s own little faults and fortes, so even if you can only see the cons, someone else can see the pros. I still love the V50, though, as slow as it is sometimes...

True, although only if you’re under six feet tall as our entire family is...
